Botanicals & Co is an independent botanical publication exploring plants through science, history, traditional knowledge and contemporary practice. We publish in-depth botanical monographs alongside writing about aromatherapy, herbalism, skincare, food, cultivation, history and the many ways plants have become part of everyday life.

The Botanical Library is our growing collection of in-depth monographs devoted to individual plants and botanical ingredients. Each monograph brings together botanical identity, chemistry, history, traditional use, contemporary applications, scientific evidence, safety and sourcing. New monographs are added regularly, and existing entries may be reviewed and updated as evidence develops.

Yes. Botanical Library monographs are freely available to read online, with downloadable PDF editions available for readers who would like to keep them for reference. Because monographs may be reviewed and updated over time, the website should be regarded as the current version.

The Botanical Archives explores the history and culture surrounding plants. It looks beyond individual species to examine subjects such as historical preparations, old botanical texts, trade, domestic practice, fragrance, food and the ways botanical knowledge has travelled between generations and cultures.

Rituals explores practical and sensory ways in which plants have become part of everyday life, from teas, bathing and fragrance to seasonal and domestic botanical traditions. Where a practice is historical or traditional, we describe it as such. Traditional practice should not automatically be presented as evidence of efficacy.

The Journal is the broader editorial home of Botanicals & Co. It includes writing across Botanicals, Aromatherapy, Herbalism, Botanical Kitchen, Skincare, Living Well, Stewardship and The Study. Readers can also subscribe to receive a monthly Journal roundup on the last Sunday of every month.

No. Botanicals & Co is an educational and editorial publication. We explore scientific research alongside history, traditional knowledge and contemporary botanical practice, but our content is not individual medical, veterinary or other professional advice.

We distinguish between historical use, traditional knowledge, preliminary scientific research and evidence supported by stronger contemporary research. Where practical, substantial articles and Botanical Library monographs provide references so readers can investigate the underlying evidence themselves. Our approach is explained in greater detail in our Editorial & Evidence Policy.

No. Traditional knowledge can be historically, culturally and scientifically important, but a history of use does not by itself establish safety or efficacy. We aim to preserve the distinction between what people have done, why they may have done it, and what contemporary evidence can demonstrate.

New material is published throughout the year. The Botanical Library is being developed progressively, with new monographs added regularly. The Journal email provides a monthly roundup on the last Sunday of each month.
